Themes of the day - Overview

Every day of the programm is dedicated to a certain theme. Inspired by the slogan of KulturStadion® "The Body- the Art of Movement" the engagement with the human body and its forms of movement will play the central role within the programme.

Friday, 14th of August 2009 – Opening Night
The day before the competitions, the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009™ will be officially inaugurated. KulturStadion® at the Brandenburg Gate will be presenting different artists on two stages during the whole event.

Saturday, 15th of August 2009 - Berlin Day
On the second day KulturStadion® presents the city that hosts the 12th Championships of Athletics to the international public. The diversity of Berlin will be shown in all its aspects, from the early tradition of Revue Theater to today´s urban culture.

Sunday, 16th of August 2009 – Day of Nations
Having the start and finish line at Brandenburg Gate, the athletes and fans of the women´s walk competition will pass the embassies of Russia, Great Britain, France and the USA. KulturStadion® has invited these and other embassies to take part in the entertainment program and to present artists themselves. Participating countries have the opportunity to display cultural content on their nations in the Champions Lounge. According to the theme of the day, the cooking show will consequently prepare international cuisine.

Monday, 17th of August 2009 - Day of Youth The Day of Youth follows the idea of education and empathy. In co-operation with various nonprofit organizations (such as Welthungerhilfe), KulturStadion® aims to educate children about all aspects within sports. By having experienced different sports elements like throwing, jumping and running-modules the children will discover their social, physical and even intercultural relevance.

Tuesday, 18th of August 2009 – Fitness Day Health & Fitness are becoming more and more important in western societies. Curating a specific program on Tuesday 18th, KulturStadion® is paying tribute to this social phenomenon. Performances by famous group ‘Flying Steps’, World Champions in break-dance, will encourage the audience not just to follow the show, but also to interact with the performers on stage. Sport scientists are asked to discuss with the participating athletes about their training methods. How to lead a healthy diet will be taught through cooking shows by experienced and well-known chefs inside the Champions Lounge.

Wednesday, 19th of August 2009 - Fan Day Halfway through the 9-day program, the content on Wednesday is dedicated to the fans. Visitors of the Championships from all over the world will be given the opportunity to meet their idols. Inside the Champions Lounge former sports legends will verbally defend their records against actual IAAF athletes. Next to the evening´s Top Act, the Blue Man Group, Comedians and famous rock bands are invited to entertain sports most dedicated supporters, the fans.

Thursday, 20th of August 2009 - One World Day Being the most important sports event of the year, the 12th IAAF World Championships of Athletics will create big (media) coverage. Just like the world´s largest sports association IAAF hosts international athletes, KulturStadion® will integrate artists on the same level. To fulfill the global dimension of the event, world famous music acts will perform on the Main Stage. In the Champions Lounge renowned personalities and professionals will discuss the intercultural meaning of sports.

Friday, 21st of August 2009 - Daegu 2011 Day The 13th IAAF World Championships of Athletics will take place in Daegu, South-Korea. For that reason KulturStadion® will offer one day of the program to the next host. On Friday the 23rd Daegu will be given the opportunity to showcase their concept within an installation and performance. The content inside the KulturStadion® will display Korean traditions, such as cuisine and culture.

Saturday, 22nd of August 2009 - Marathon Day The accessible Champions-Lounge will host talk formats with professionals from the Institute of Movement and Training Science about the marathon fascination. Further, the participants of the Champions-Run will recieve information about correct running styles and training methods. KulturStadion® plans not just to entertain fans and tourists but also to interact with visitors.

Sunday, 23rd of August 2009 - Final Day Looking back on the 9 days of all kinds of sports related events KulturStadion® sets the stage for a big finissage of the cultural program. In connection with one of the most classical disciplines in sports, the Women’s marathon final, the last day of KulturStadion®´s program is themed the Classics-Day. The performance by the National Ballet Company (Staatsballett Berlin) on the Main Stage followed by the world famous classic superstar Nigel Kennedy will create an unforgettable Finale Furioso.
