Last night during the ZDF television show “Johannes B. Kerner”, Klaus Wowereit, the mayor of Berlin and president of the World Championships organising committee, presented the mascot for the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009™ to the public.
Klaus Wowereit expressed his delight in introducing the mascot in such a prominent position: "This athletic and friendly bear fits well to Berlin and to the World Championships in Athletics. He will be quite successful in presenting the largest sports event of the year.”
Dr. Clemens Prokop, the executive president of the World Championships organising committee, continued: "The mascot will now be presenting the World Championships in Athletics to the general public and will be further increasing the public’s enthusiasm for berlin 2009™. I am certain that the athletics fans will have fun with this mascot, and I would like to extend a call to everyone to help come up with a name for our bear.”
The mascot was developed by the Swiss sport marketing company “Infront Sports & Media”, which gained the honour after successfully competing in the bidding process against eight other contestants.
A call to the public to come up with a name for the mascot also began with the presentation of the mascot on the TV show hosted by Johannes B. Kerner, who is also a member of Board of Trustees for berlin 2009™. Starting late Thursday evening, anyone can now submit their suggestions for a name on the website of the BOC World Championships organising committee at www.berlin2009.org.
