The “Ball des Sports” took place in the Rhein-Main-Hallen complex in Wiesbaden (Saturday, February 7, 2009) under the motto “Der Lauf der Welt” (The Way the World Runs), and in anticipation of the largest sporting event of the year, it had berlin 2009™ as a central theme.

Dr. Clemens Prokop, the executive president of the World Championships organising committee and president of the German Athletics Association (DLV), addressed the cooperation with the Stiftung Deutsche Sporthilfe (German Sports Aid Foundation), which organises the ball: “The Ball des Sports is the most important sportive social event in Germany. We are pleased that the World Championships in Athletics, the largest sporting event of the year, was chosen as the central theme for this unique benefit gala.”

One programme highlight of the Ball des Sports was a pole vaulting exhibition in the ballroom, in which the German pole vaulters Lars Börgeling, Richard Spiegelburg and Karsten Dilla presented one of the most optically impressive disciplines of the core Olympic sport of athletics. The stage design and decorations in the Rhein-Main-Hallen complex were modelled after the Berlin Olympic Stadium and picked up on elements of athletics.

A central element of the integration of berlin 2009™ in the Ball des Sports was a World Championship lounge. The German world-class class javelin throwers, Christina Obergföll and Steffi Nerius, demonstrated their track and field discipline for the ball guests on an interactive javelin simulation apparatus in the World Championship lounge.

The benefit gala, which is organised by the Stiftung Deutsche Sporthilfe (German Sports Aid Foundation), is one of the most important social events in Germany. About 1,800 invited guests from the areas of sport, business, politics and culture, meet each year at the Ball des Sports, an event benefitting the Stiftung Deutsche Sporthilfe.
