German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel receives the World Championships organising committee and leading representatives from the areas of politics, business, and television in the Federal Chancellery

On Friday, February 6, 2009, the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. Angela Merkel, received the organising committee for the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009™ (BOC), two top athletes from the German Athletics Association (DLV), and leading representatives from the areas of politics, business, and television at a luncheon in the Federal Chancellery.

In the presence of the German Federal Minister of the Interior, Dr. Wolfgang Schäuble, and the mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, the Chancellor was markedly impressed with the status of the preparations for the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009™: “With the World Championships in Athletics in Berlin, Germany will once again be the stage for a major international sporting event. I am certain that the spectators from Berlin, from Germany, and from around the world will feel welcome in the German capital and will experience fabulous athletic competitions here.”

Following the joint meeting in Dr. Merkel’s office, Klaus Wowereit, the mayor of Berlin and president of the World Championships organising committee, stated: “The invitation to the Federal Chancellery demonstrates the interest by the Chancellor and the German government in the World Championships and strengthens the importance of this sporting event not only for Berlin, but for all of Germany.”

During the course of the luncheon, the attending guests were provided with information on the athletic programme of the World Championships, the status of the high definition broadcast, and on the cultural programme accompanying berlin 2009™, among other things.

In the presence of top athletes Bianca Kappler (long jump) and Raul Spank (high jump), Dr. Clemens Prokop, executive president of the World Championships organising committee, expressed his pleasure about the public perception of berlin 2009™: “We are quite on track in our preparations for berlin 2009™, and we will experience an excellent World Championships in Athletics with a fantastic atmosphere in the Berlin Olympic Stadium and in the Berlin city centre.”
